Building a living space in the middle of a 100-acre forest comes with unique architectural challenges. For Bruno and Mary of the popular YouTube channel @Southern Adventures (500K+ Subscribers), constructing their off-grid treehouse has been an incredible journey. However, as the multi-level deck took shape, one major issue became impossible to ignore: a high-altitude deck without handrails is a massive safety hazard.
To secure the perimeter without ruining the panoramic views of the surrounding canopy, Bruno turned to BLIKA Cable Railings. Here is a complete breakdown of how this treehouse railing project came together, from structural prep to the final cable tensioning.
Project Overview
- Project Type: Off-Grid Treehouse Deck Railing Upgrade
- Collaborator: Bruno & Mary (Southern Adventures, 500K+ Subscribers)
- Location: 100-Acre Forest Homestead
- Products Used: BLIKA Black Cable Railing Kit, 1/8" Black Stainless Steel Cable (2,000+ ft), Surface Mount Posts, Wood Post Anchors & Rubber Grommets
- Primary Goal: Maximize deck safety while preserving 360-degree forest views

The Challenge: Safety Meets Forest Views
Living off-grid is amazing, but safety always comes first. As Bruno’s followers pointed out, having a high deck way up in the trees meant railings were an absolute must.
The big design puzzle was simple: regular wooden railings or thick safety mesh would feel too heavy. They block the natural sunlight and ruin the gorgeous view from inside the treehouse. Bruno needed a clean, simple railing that was super strong, weatherproof, and practically invisible.
The solution was a black cable railing system from BLIKA. The slim black stainless steel cables virtually disappear against the forest backdrop. The system keeps the deck secure while letting you enjoy an open, clear view of nature.

Step-by-Step Installation & Real DIY Insights
Installing cable railings on an off-grid treehouse requires adaptability. Here is how Bruno tackled the installation process step by step:
1. Post Placement & Structural Blocking
Because cable railings exert significant tension on end and corner posts, rigid anchoring is essential. Bruno added extra wood blocking beneath the deck boards to give the lag bolts a solid foundation. Once secured, the posts aligned so precisely that you could look straight through the pre-drilled cable holes from one end to the other.
"They're so perfectly lined up that I can see straight through the holes. Those are the best railing posts I've ever put in." — Bruno, Southern Adventures

2. Installing Rail Caps Before Tensioning
A crucial step in any cable installation: always install your top handrails before tensioning the cables. The top rail caps lock the entire vertical post framework together. When thousands of pounds of tension are applied to the cables, the pre-installed rail caps prevent the end posts from leaning inward.

3. Integrating Cables into Existing Wood Support Posts
The treehouse porch relies on heavy structural wooden posts. Rather than installing redundant metal posts right next to them, Bruno drilled halfway through the wood posts using a custom drilling jig and inserted threaded anchor sleeves. This allowed the black cables to pass straight through the timber, creating a clean transition between wood and metal.
"I don't think that the wood to metal transition really is bad, I think it looks pretty nice." — Bruno, Southern Adventures

4. Cable Running & Precision Tensioning
Running over 2,000 feet of black stainless steel cable across a 44-foot span requires exact measurements. Because standard turnbuckle fittings only offer about 0.5 inches of tension adjustment over long runs, cables must be measured and cut precisely before crimping.
5. Finishing Touches with Rubber Grommets
To protect the protective coating on the cables and eliminate rattle from wind vibration, UV-resistant black rubber grommets were inserted into every pre-drilled post hole.
The Result: A Safe and Cozy Treehouse Railing
The treehouse deck instantly looked amazing. Mixing black metal posts, warm wood, and thin cables gave the outside a fresh, modern upgrade.
"I'm very happy with the way they turned out. The wood-to-metal transition looks pretty nice... and it's very minimal, so it doesn't block the beautiful view from the living room." — Bruno, Southern Adventures
